“But the first day I arrived, the reality of their lives differed slightly from my romanticized image.
Volvo Ocean Race competitors train every morning, following a tough weight-lifting programme. They only eat healthy meals and drink protein shakes. They sail for several hours every day, repeating the same manoeuvres on their own, without another boat to compare themselves to. They tack and gybe repeatedly, change sails, stack sails, test sail angles.
Then they come back to the dock, tidy the boat and go for dinner. When night comes, they go home and sleep, away from their friends and families.
And the day after, they do it all over again.
Sure, the sailing is exciting. Meals vary a little bit and the weather changes. The race is getting closer, too – there are just over five months to the first In-Port Race in Alicante on October 4. But the schedule remains ; it’s just another day at the office.
I wondered where the exhilaration was. Every chat we had, every dinner we shared, I was looking for the extraordinary. I wanted waves, crowds, storms, champagne on a stage.
Then I realised this is it. This is their big dream, and they love it. They cannot imagine doing anything else. They all think they are so lucky to do this. They don’t do it by default, they don’t think it sucks to wake up at the crack of dawn to train and do the same things day after day. They just want to be as strong as they possibly can on the start line in Alicante.
They are living their big dream. It takes hard work to go through this; it requires a strong character to stay focused. And they are working hard, and they have the discipline. They want this and they are going for it. They are doing it.
As I returned to my desk at race HQ, I realised one thing. You will never achieve your dream unless you dare to live it.”
